Apoptosis – an overview
Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is important in development, aging, and disease. It is triggered via extrinsic or intrinsic pathways; the extrinsic pathway involves ligand binding to death receptors, whereas the intrinsic pathway activates in response to DNA damage, ischemia or oxidative stress. Activity of the intrinsic or extrinsic pathway leads to caspase activation. Caspases then cleave cytoskeletal proteins and nuclear lamins and promote DNA degradation. Finally, apoptotic cells undergo phagocytosis.
